The Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award (ABNA)

Entries begin on January 23rd and you can enter until February 5th unless they reach 5000 entries by that date.  They will accept up to 5000 entries in two separate categories, general fiction and young adult fiction.

See the official rules at, but basically it’s a contest for novels between 50,000 and 150,000 words that have not been previously published. Self-published is OK if you have all the rights.

It’s best to enter the contest the moment it opens, which is 1/23 12:01 am EST (which is just 9:01 pm on 1/22 for me). From my experience in similar, smaller contests, a large amount of people will enter the second the contest starts. There is a limit of 5,000 entries to each category, and I expect those to be filled quickly.

Last year it took about five days before all the slots were filled, although there were several idiots who kept pushing last year’s announcement that the entries were closed to the top as a “prank.”
