Technology Rant

My dad is an author.  He’s been writing since he was a little kid.

I just told him that he needs a blog, and a Facebook account and a twitter account so that when he is published he will have a built in readership to take to the publisher with him.

His response:

“Shut up.”

My sister is also an author.  She’s been writing since I badgered her into it about 20 years ago.  She writes paranormal historical inspirational romantic fantasy science fiction.  Say that one five times fast, then try to categorize it on Amazon.  Ouch.  She also does not have a twitter account, or Facebook, or MySpace, or LinkedIn or any of the other odd…well, you get the idea.  My family is a little strange that way.  She says, “Shut up.”

I think this is reasonable.  Shut up about how I need a cell phone and I need a twitter account and I need all this other technological gobbledygook so that the publisher, when I get a contract, doesn’t need to work as hard to sell my book.

Of course, with that attitude I’ll be publishing my own books and doing my own publicity, which means I’ll need a twitter account, and a cell phone, and a Facebook account…

I think I’ll go be a hermit and send chapters down the river wrapped in cellophane.  Then I’ll become famous when someone finds all the chapters and puts them together and I’ll get published that way.

Yeah, I’ll go be a hermit.

I think being a writer qualifies you as a hermit already. Facebook, Twitter, etc just help feed that lifestyle, since you can do a blog tour instead of a book tour to promote your book, get twice the audience, and never leave the hermit shack. That’s the beauty of the writer life!

I say Hurray for the hermit in all of us! Of course the problem is that publishers will not normally make the trek to your hermit shack to get you to sign a contract. There’s always something.

I’ve posted you guys on my facebook account so more people can find you, and I’ll be putting you in the blog later today, if I get that far. So, just a little quote to help your day and put the hermit idea into perspective.

“I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process.” -Vincent Van Gogh

    A small price to pay.

Thanks so much, Mark. Great quote. I don’t think we decided on a month to interview you. How about March? I’m not sure what day yet but will find out. Probably one of the later Saturdays in the month. Which one would work best for you, or would May be better?

I should be available in March, but not the last Saturday of the month, that’s writers group night. Right now the calendar is clear, so whatever works best for you all should be fine.
Odd, for some reason I read that as “latter Saturdays”, and I thought, “Yup, that’s me, a latter Saturday saint.” – Yes, sometimes my own mind scares me.

Ha ha. funny. I’ll contact you about dates we’re meeting for March and April.
